The workpiece measurement probe has a base part and a sensor mounting joined by a positioning device enabling limited tree-dimensional mounting displacement w.r.t. the base. A sensor produces a signal which is evaluated to yield the coordinates of the point with which it is in contact. It enables significant movement between sensor and base, positive accurate rest position measurement, and a rapid signal response. Measurements are unaffected by instantaneous forces acting on the sensor whilst the machine accelerates or decellerates. a pressure sensor consisting of one or more pressure sensitive piezoelectric or piezoresistive elements is mounted in the sensor mounting. A three element sensor may be used with all sensor outputs connected to a circuit whose operation depends on the sign of one of the output signals.
