A gate-switch-off thyristor (2) is in series with the switching-off voltage source (7) across the thyristor or group of thyristors (1) being turned off. The voltage source is shunted by a first switch (4), a resistor (6) and a second switch (3). The thyristor's gate is connected via capacitor (5) to the junction between the first switch and the resistor. The resistor acts as a current limiter. The two switches are transistors or thyristors. The resistor may be replaced by a Zener diode. A Zener diode may shunt the capacitor. The advantage lies in needing no additional voltage source and in requiring relatively few components. |
