The usual type of side and face milling cutter has spiral flutes which produce cutting edges with positive rake on one face and negative rake on the opposite face. The cutting edges with negative rake are less efficient and need to be re-ground more frequently. This problem is overcome by making the cutter in three parts (2) (3) (4) which fit together along stepped joint faces (Sp1) (Sp2). The end section (2) has two types of cutting edges, one set which form a continuation of the flutes (4) of the main cutter and a second set which form spirals of the opposite hand so that these cutting edges have positive rake.
|
