The distance measuring system for a camera has a light emitter (10) which directs a beam of light at the subject (T) and from which light is reflected back. Dependent on the distance of the subject, and hence the angle of the reflected light, that latter strikes one of a line of photo elements mounted on a collector strip (13) inside the camera. Each element is connected to a measuring and control circuit. The elements are rectangular in shape and mounted in common with the emitter, which is a semiconductor device on a common panel. The light beam passes through a lens with its optical axis approximately parallel to the optical axis of a second lens (12) for the reflected light. The two lenses are rectangular in shape with a plane rear face parallel to the photo elements.
