<p>A porous diaphragm for an electrolytic cell used for the electrolysis of aq. solns. of ionisable cpds., partic. alkaline metal chlorides or hydroxides, comprises a thermoplastic fibrous support material impregnated with particles of formula XmSipOqHr.nH2O (I), where X is >=1 metal which is Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ti, Zr, Al or Zn; p = 1-16; m = 0-p; q is from 2 to about 5p+r; r = 0-4p; n = 0-30. This siliceous compsn. can undergo hydration when in contact with >=1 of the ionisable cpds. in the cell. The fibrous support material has an electroconducting area on one of its faces and is provided with means of obtaining a linear permeability w.r.t. the aq. solns. The support material is e.g. (a) a polyolefin or its chlorinated and/or fluorinated derivs., partic. polypropylene, PTFE, fluorinated ethylene/propylene copolymer, PCTFR, polyvinyl fluoride, or polyvinylidene fluoride; or (b) a polyarylene sulphide, partic. polyphenylene sulphide. The diaphragm has good handling characteristics and is dimensionally stable during use. It has efficient sepn. properties and allows reduced cell tension to be obtd. while the cell functions.</p> |
