The compounds of formula R<1>S-CH=CH-COX, where R<1> is an alkyl, alkenyl or aryl group and X is OM, where M is H or an alkali metal, are prepared by reaction of a mercaptan R<1>SH with an acetylenemonocarboxylic acid in aqueous solution and in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. The compounds obtained have properties, on the one hand, of surface-active agents and, on the other hand, of antibiotics.
