The tool for attaching an ear tag to the ear of an animal, has two handles (1, 2) with a spring (30) between them, terminating in two jaws (4, 5). The ear tag has a half (10) with a bush attached to a flat plate, which is assembled with a second half consisting of a second plate (8) with a stem (7) protruding from it, carrying a point (9) at the tip, which is forced through the bush (11) on the first half. The upper jaw has a pin (6) protruding from it which is inserted through the second plate and its hollow stem and spike to retain it. The lower jaw has an open slot (19) at its outer end, to engage the bush of the other ear tag half, trapping it underneath. The tag is then located by a groove in the jaw under this tilting plate.
