The hay cutter has a linear drive unit (1) and a cutting knife (3) with a guide (4). The transmission of force to the cutting knife (3) takes place from the drive unit (1) by means of an angled push rod (2) which is connected to the unit (1) in terms of force transmission in the cutting direction only. By means of this force transmission to the cutting knife (3), the operator can make a vertical cut through the pressed hay (5) on the haystack (6) without any effort. <IMAGE>
