ANTIBIOTIC COMPOUNDS AND METHOD OF PRODUCTION THEREOF

Compounds selected from the group consisting of 3"-N-demethylgentamicin C2 and 3"-N-demethylgentamicin C1, and being represented by the formula: wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or methyl group, are prepared by reacting a compound represented by the formula: wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or methyl groups with the proviso that when R1 is hydrogen atom, R2 is methyl group, with an oxidizing agent. The novel compounds display potent broad spectrum antibacterial activity, with less toxicity than gentamicin C1 and gentamicin C2.
