Isobutyric acid prepn. by boron tri:fluoride-catalysed carbonylation - of propylene, isopropanol, ether and/or ester deriv. in aliphatic carboxylic acid medium

Isobutyric acid is prepd. from propylene, isopropanol, diisopropyl ether and/or an isopropyl ester by reaction with CO, at 50-150 (90-120) degrees C, in a reaction mixt. contg. = 8>=8 wt. % BF3 and a quantity at least equiv. to BF3 of >=1 2-18 (2-6) C aliphatic carboxylic acid (I). Catalyst can be sepd. in re-usable form from the reaction prod. By-prod. formation is low, e.g. 5%. Selectivity is high and reaches >90-95%.
