A camshaft 1, e.g. of grey cast iron, has its cam surfaces hardened e.g. by melting along tracks 3 as by T.I.G. or electron beam heating. The edge zones are left unhardened, only the intermediate zone, e.g. two thirds the cam width, being hardened. The relative softness of the edge zones shortens the running in period in that stress peaks at the edges are obviated, whilst yet not detracting from wear resistance of the cam surface as a whole. <IMAGE> |
