The bolted assemblies are seldom perfectly rigid and consequently fretting occurs between the head of the bolt and the surface of the bolted component. In addition bending moments are imposed on the bolt causing an increase in stress. A method of eliminating this disadvantage uses a spacer (4) under the head (3) of the bolt (2). The spacer (4) has a tapered bore (10) and cylindrical end surfaces (8, 9). The centre lines of curvature of these end surfaces are mutually perpendicular. The spacer allows a limited degree of angular freedom for the bolt (2) and so prevents fretting.
|
