The retractable water jet propulsion unit for watercraft, partic. sailing boats, is intended for connection to an inboard power unit with a hollow output shaft projecting through a flexible seal in a substantially vertical panel (66). Power is transmitted by axial claws on the shaft engaging a radial pin through the impeller spindle. When not in use the unit (15) is tilted up about a horizontal hinge at its forward end, into a housing (63) recessed into the hull with a hull-profile closing panel (64) for the underside and a splash proof cover (65). The unit can also be tilted further, through the housing top opening, into an inspection position.
