A simple test apparatus is used for testing portable methane detectors for use in mining, particularly coal mining. It supplies a dose of gas, containing methane to the detector and generates timed signals to indicate when the detector should have responded. The apparatus is mounted in a box on a mount (2) with table top screw attachment (3) and the various controls and indicators are mounted on the box front plate (14). These consist of an electric mains switch (20), ON-OFF switch (8) and associated indicators (9, 10), a timing lamp (12) and audible alarm (11) a gas connector (6) into which each detector is plugged, and a flow meter (3). A gas cylinder can be attached (5) or alternatively a mains gasometer can be used (4).
