A microfilm reading device has an illumination unit for the microfilm. There is a film stage which is movable with respect to the device case and carrying a delivery and a take-up reel for the roll film, and a lens for the observed micro-image projection on a screen. A motor is provided for driving the roll film (7) forward and backward. A control for the forward and backward drive moves the film stage (2) from a middle rest position in one or the other direction (C, D).
