The simple cylinder lock has a facility for instant adjustment without tools to accept alternative keys. The lock cannot be opened with a skeleton key. The cams (50) moving in slots in the cylinder (12) engage in cavities (52, 54) and are actuated by key followers (70). Rotation of the cylinder so that the key follower retaining piece (42) moves into the recess (46) releases the serrations connecting the cams (50) to the followers (70). In this setting insertion of an alternative key results in relative movement of cams (50) and followers (70) to conform to the code of the new key. Prevention of opening with a skeleton key is achieved by locking of the cams (50), affected by displacement of the rod (16) from its groove (18) by any small rotational movement.
