A metal cage assembly is produced continuously in predetermined lengths by feeding parallel metal wires over a fixed central core whilst overwinding with one or more circumferential wires spot-welded at each intersection with the axial wires. The overall dia. is adjustable and the completed assembly is cut into predetermined lengths automatically. Used for the automatic prodn. of support cages for cartridge filter elements, which carry a filter medium on the outside of the support. The inexpensive prodn. method for large numbers of elements gives accurate control of element dimensions.
