1498718 Producing phosphate coatings PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES Ltd 1 Dec 1975 [4 Dec 1974] 49209/75 Heading C7U A metal surface is (1) cleaned (2) treated with an aqueous colloidal suspension or solution of Ti phosphate (3) treated with an acidic solution containing metal and phosphate ions and a watersoluble organic polymer which is curable on heating and (4) dried and baked, without rinsing before drying, to form a phosphate coating comprising cured polymer. The metal may be Fe, steel, galvanised steel or Al, preferably degreased with alkali and water-rinsed, and optionally pickled with HCl or H 2 SO 4 . The Ti phosphate solution may contain 0À01-50 g/l and be used at 10-100‹C; the metal ions in the phosphating bath may be Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mn, Al, Ca or Mg; the bath may contain HNO 3 , nitrate, halide, e.g. HF or HBF 4 , oxidizing agents, e.g. HNO 2 , nitrate, H 2 O 2 , peroxides, ClO 3 <SP>-</SP>, or Ni or Cu as accelerator, suitable amounts of ingredients are: 0À1-50 g/l Zn, 1-500 g/l PO 4 , 0-50 g/l Ni, 0-50 g/l NO 3 <SP>-</SP>, and 0-50 g/lF. The polymer (0À01-50 g/l) may be a maleic acid or anhydride copolymer, e.g. polymethylvinyl ether/ maleic anhydride, polyethylene/maleic acid, or PVA/maleic acid, a polycarboxylic acid, e.g. polyacrylic or polymethacrylic acid, or polyvinyl pyrrolidone; the bath may also contain a surfactant; it is used at 10-100‹C and the coated body is baked at 50-300‹C for 0À5-30 sec; it may be conventionally post-treated with chromate, and an organic anti-corrosive agent. |
