A non-aqueous electric cell comprises an anode of a metal capable of reducing SO 2 , a cathode of material inert to SO 2 but on which SO 2 is reducible and an electrolyte, in which both electrodes are immersed, comprising liquid SO 2 or a solution of gaseous SO 2 in a minor amount of solvent and a salt which is inert to SO 2 and the anode metal, wherein a minor amount, relative to the SO 2 , of an insoluble cathode depolarizer is also present. The cell may be rechargeable. The electrolyte salt may be LiBr. The use of a tertiary amine as electrolyte solvent is disclaimed. In examples, the cell is of glass with a rubber stopper having holes for the electrodes and SO 2 and inert gas supply tubes. The anode is of Li and the cathode of Ag/AgCl or Ag/Ag 2 O. The electrolyte solvent is propylene carbonate and the salt LiAlCl 4 . |
