The transmitter comprises means (10) for generating video components which are applied to the inputs of transmitters (20) which store the video components periodically at the scanning rate, and restore them at a slow rate to a modulator (30). By means of the restored components, this modulator frequency-modulates corresponding sub-carriers chosen from the S.C.A (Service Channel Authorised) band allotted to each FM channel in addition to the band corresponding to the stereo signal. A sub-carrier which is frequency-modulated by the sound is also provided in this same band. These modulated sub-carriers are combined with the audiostereo sub-carriers in an FM modulator (60) and broadcast in an FM channel via a corresponding power stage. The associated receiver carries out the separation of the sub-carriers and the corresponding demodulation, on reception. The invention applies in particular to the broadcasting of audio visual programmes, such as conferences, advertising programmes and teaching programmes.
