It is claimed that mechanical energy can be recovered from atmospheric heat by operating a steam engine at low temp. The residual heat is led away by a heat pump and all or part of it is returned to the circuit, or discharged into the cooled air. The steam cycle can be formed into a thermal accelerator, the entire cycle being operated in the gaseous phase.
