[Also in Division F4] A laminated duplex panel for cryogenic insulation comprises a metal foil member 16 forming a primary barrier wall and a base member 15 forming a secondary barrier wall, the base member including a shell of glass fibre reinforced resin filled with a cellular plastic insulating material 18. The metal foil may be aluminium, the shell may be a glass fibre reinforced polyester and the cellular material may be polyurethane foam. The panels may be secured to a support, e.g. the hull of a ship, by bolts 36 and flanges 26, 27, the gap between adjacent panels being filled by T- shaped plug pieces 28. The metal foil 16 overlaps one edge of each panel and is adhered, either with or without connecting strip 34, to the other edge of the next panel. The panel is produced by placing a layer of glass fibre cloth on the metal foil, uniting the cloth and foil by means of an adhesive, e.g. an epoxy resin, superimposing on the cloth layer at least one batt of glass fibre to form an additional layer, and moulding the polyester resin in, on and about the cloth and batt to make a laminate. |
