Expanded clay, used for light concrete aggregates, is prepared by adding coke sludge, deposited as residue in heavy oil production, to starting material. - Pref. coke sludge contains Fe2O3, and water, oil and solids, where solids consist of coke and ash, and ash contains CaO, MgO, Fe2O3, Al2O3 and S oxide. - High quality expanded clay with smooth pore-free surface is prepared by using coke sludge containing 62% water, 14% oil, 24% solids. - The solids consist of 45% coke and 55% ash. - The ash contains 34.4% CaO, 9.7% MgO, 28.4% Fe2O3, 20.2% Al2O3 and 7% SO3.
