Vanadium carbonitride and/or vanadium nitride material is produced by treating vanadium oxide raw material at a high temp., pref. 900 - 1100 degrees C with a gaseous hydrocarbon and nitrogen and/or ammonia, either successively or simultaneously. The pdts. are used as steel alloying additives for introduction of vanadium and opt. nitrogen. The process is economical and suitable for commercial use.
