The invention comprises (1) novel compounds of Formula I <FORM:1104945/C2/1> wherein (a) n represents 4 or an integer from 6 to 11, and X is hydroxy, keto or cyclic lower alkylene ketal; or (b) n represents 5 and X is keto or cyclic lower alkylene ketal; and (2) the preparation of compounds of Formula I wherein n is an integer from 4 to 11 and X is hydroxy, keto or cyclic lower alkylene ketal, which comprises subjecting a benzylcycloalkylamine of Formula X <FORM:1104945/C2/2> wherein n is 4 to 11, and X11 is hydroxy or cyclic lower alkylene ketal, to catalytic hydrogenolysis using a palladium charcoal catalyst, and then, if desired, subjecting a resultant ketal substituted compound of Formula I to hydrolysis to obtain the free ketone. Benzylcycloalkylamines of Formula X may be prepared by reducing an N-(hydroxy-or oxo-cycloalkyl) benzamide or an N-(oxocycloalkyl) benzamide cyclic alkylene ketal. The N - (hydroxy - or oxo - cycloalkyl) benzamides are prepared by subjecting an N-cycloalkyl-benzamide to the oxygenating activity of a species of micro-organism of Subphylum 2 of Phylum III. The N-(hydroxycycloalkyl) benzamides may be oxidized to give the corresponding keto derivatives, or converted to the corresponding cyclic alkylene ketal. |
