The present invention provides a negative electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery, which can increase battery capacity and can improve cycle performance and battery initial efficiency. The negative electrode active material for a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery according to the present invention comprises negative electrode active material particles containing a silicon compound expressed by SiO_x, wherein 0.5 <= x <= 1.6. The negative electrode active material particles are at least partially coated with a carbon coating, the carbon coating exhibits a specific surface area ranging from 5 m^2/g to 1000 m^2/g when the specific surface area is measured by a multipoint BET method after the carbon coating has been separated from the negative electrode active material particles. Further, the carbon coating exhibits a compression resistivity ranging from 1.0 10^(-3) cm to 1.0 cm in the case where the carbon coating is compressed so as to have a density of 1.0 g/cm^3 when the compression resistivity is measured after the carbon coating has been separated from the negative electrode active material particles. |
