A frictional contact material comprises a porous matrix having a free energy of oxide formation more positive than that of lead oxide in which is incorporated an oxide mixture, the amount being such that the melting point of the mixture is lower than the melting point of lead oxide. The matrix may be of copper, silver or sintered iron or aluminium coated with copper or silver, and may be backed with steel, aluminium or plastic. Oxides which may be used with lead oxide are SiO2, Al2O3, Bi2O3, PbO-CrO3, V2O5, As2O5, PbO-MoO3, PbO-WO3, Sb2O3, B2O3, TiO2, SnO2, P2O5, Fe3O4 and Cu2O, and mixtures thereof.ALSO:A frictional contact material which may have a high coefficient of friction comprises a porous matrix having a free energy of oxidation more positive than that of lead oxide, in which is incorporated an oxide mixture the amount of which is such that the melting point of the mixture is lower than the melting point of lead oxide.
