A process for the production of 3-alkoxy-1-propanal (I) comprises reaction of acrolein with saturated alcohols in the presence of a base, comprising alkali or alkaline earth hydroxides or amines, as catalysts at 0-45 deg C. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of 3-alkoxy-1-propanol (II) by hydrogenation of the reaction mixture from the production of 3-alkoxy-1-propanal (I), without purification of the intermediate (I), using a hydrogenation catalyst, and isolation of (II).
