PURPOSE:To obtain a novel hydrocarbon resin having remarkably improved odor and heat-resistance, by hydrogenating a copolymer of isopropenyltoluene and a fraction by-produced in petroleum refinery and containing unsaturated hydrocarbon. CONSTITUTION:100pts.(wt.) of isopropenyltoluene is copolymerized with 0-50pts. of an arbitrary fraction selected from fractions containing 4-5C unsaturated hydrocarbons (e.g. 1-butene, isobutylene, 1-pentene, etc.) by-produced in petroleum cracking, petroleum refinery, etc., in the presence of usually 0.5-1.5wt% (based on the raw material) Friedel-Crafts catalyst (e.g. BF3-phenol complex). The obtained copolymer is hydrogenated to obtain the objected resin having a number-average molecular weight of 200-2,000, iodine value of <=10 and hydrogenation ratio of the benzene nucleus of 2-98%. USE:Useful as an additive for hot-melt adhesive and pressure-sensitive adhesive.
