PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method having excellent selectivity of methacrolein from isobutene or tertiary butanol. SOLUTION: A catalyst containing molybdenum, bismuth and iron is used. Isobutene or tertiary butanol is oxidized by retaining the amount of oxygen in a feed gas containing isobutene or tertiary butanol smaller than a stoichiometric amount based on the total amount of isobutene or tertiary butanol to be converted by a reaction. The catalyst in a reduction state by the reaction is brought into contact with an oxidizing gas, regenerated and reused in the reaction.
