1523186 Cu; carbon fibre composite HITACHI Ltd 27 Oct 1976 [29 Oct 1975] 44700/76 Heading C7D A non-directional carbon fibre - copper matrix composite comprising randomly arranged carbon fibres and a copper matrix in which the carbon fibres are embedded wherein the carbon fibres are bonded together by an additive forming a carbide where it contacts the fibres, the amount of carbon fibre present being at least 20 volume per cent based on the total composite volume. The additive may be one or more of Ti, Zr, Nb, V, Cr, Mo and W present in an amount of at least 3 volume per cent. The composite may be prepared by mixing and agitating carbon fibres of aspect ratio of at least 200 with a liquid medium e.g. methyl cellulose, water or polyvinyl alcohol, copper and additive in powder form, removing the liquid medium and hot pressing in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at a pressure of at least 50Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and a temperature between the recrystallization temperature and melting point of copper. Alternating carbon fibres coated with copper may be added direct to the liquid medium. |
