Water-soluble, basic polycondensates obtainable by reacting A) water-soluble polyamide-amines having a molecular weight of at least 2000, prepared from 1. relatively high-molecular weight, aliphatic, bridged or unbridged polyalkylene-polyamines containing at least two secondary or tertiary amino groups which are capable of amide formation and at least three further internal secondary or tertiary amino groups and 2. aliphatic dicarboxylic acids having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or functional derivatives thereof, such as esters or monoesters, in a molar ratio between 1. and 2. of 0.75-1.3:1, with B) halogenated hydrocarbons which are polyfunctional towards amino groups, in a molar ratio of from 0.01 to 0.10 mol of component B per mol of basic nitrogen of component A, are used as agents for increasing the retention of fibres, fillers and pigments and for accelerating dewatering in papermaking and for treating paper machine effluent by filtration, sedimentation and flotation.
