<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform image emphasis in compressed image data. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing method includes the steps of accepting wavelet domain data prescribing a digital image. The wavelet domain data having N levels of resolution and inputs the M levels resolutions to an automated image emphasis system. M is smaller than N. At least one correction tone reproduction curve and a sharpness filter are extracted from the M levels of decompositions to emphasize the input digital image data. The image data is decompressed to obtain decompressed image data indicating the input digital image at a selected decompressed level.
