PURPOSE: To improve gray scale or gradient tonal representation of an image by dividing an image into first and second regions and printing the second variable intensity level part of representation corresponding to the second region of the image, after printing the first continuously variable intensity level part of representation corresponding to the first region of the image. CONSTITUTION: At printing by a demand type ink jet printing head 2, an input image is divided into first and second regions. A first continuously variable intensity level, continuous tone and a second discretely variable intensity level, half-tone portions of representation corresponding to the first and second regions of the image are printed by depositing ink, so that each pixel has an ink intensity level corresponding to the image intensity level for the corresponding one of the pixels of the first region of the image. A spot of ink, having a selected different diameter of the pixel of a second portion, is deposited so that the second portion of representation has a desired ink intensity level and the second region is printed. |
