A backlight module of a liquid crystal display and the liquid crystal display. The backlight module comprises a light source circuit and a light guide plate, wherein the light source circuit comprises a control circuit (202) and a plurality of light emitting units (201); each light emitting unit (201) is arranged on a side face of the light guide plate and connected to the control circuit (202), and each light emitting unit (201) lights up or goes out under the control of the control circuit (202); and the light guide plate is used for processing light rays incident from the side face and emitting same from the front surface. Compared with a light source circuit of an existing backlight module, this backlight module is lower in energy consumption.
