PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out stable image recording and to obtain high-quality recording image with a cleaning means 35 with simple constitution. SOLUTION: In an image recorder for recording the image on a sheet conveyed in a sub scanning direction perpendicular to a main scanning direction by selectively discharging an ink from the recording head 4 mounted on the carriage 5 reciprocatingly moving in the main scanning direction, a brush body 36 as a cleaning means 35 for cleaning the surface of the sheet is arranged upstream of the ink discharge position 4b of the recording head 4 in the sub scanning direction in the carriage 5, and the cleaning body 36 can slidingly contact onto the surface of the sheet only when the printing gap of the nozzle forming face 4a of the recording head 4 and the sheet is smaller than a predetermined value.
