A composition for inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, said composition comprising a vector including a nucleic acid encoding a polypeptide that promotes phosphorylation of endogenous Chk1 of a cancer cell, wherein the polypeptide inhibits cancer cell proliferation in the absence of exogenous DNA damage, wherein when the vector expresses the nucleic acid encoding the polypeptide, the expressed polypeptide consists of a C-terminal fragment of Chk1 having an amino acid sequence with at least 80% sequence identity to amino acids 331-476 of Chk1 or amino acids 421-476 of Chk1 of SEQ ID NO: 2.
