The invention pertains to a novel method of designing ergonomic and optimal keyboard layouts with conventional geometry for touch typing; and further pertains to Turkish E-keyboard layout designed with the said method. The method is based on conventional rectangular keyboard geometry, touch typing principles and Dvorak's keyboard layout evaluation criteria. The letters are assigned to the keys of the keyboard by an optimization method which considers these principles and criteria. The keyboard layouts designed by the aforesaid method have the potential of increasing the typing speed, minimizing the total tendon travel distance, distributiing the total tendon travel distance among fingers in a balanced way; and thereby lowering the risk of musculoskeletal discomfort of hand-wrist- arm and increasing typing speed. A an ergonomic and optimal keyboard layout for Turkish touch typing, called Turkish E-keyboard layout, is developed as the first application of the aforesaid method. Typing speed and comfort with E keyboard are increased by placing the letters Q, J, Ü, O, F, C, T, M, K, B, S, P in the top row; E, A, İ, I, G, Ğ, L, N, R, D, V in the middle row; and X, W, Ö, U, H, Z, Ç, Y, Ş in the bottom row. In addition, by assigning all the vowels Ü, O, E, A, İ, I, Ö, U to left hand and psitioning the frequently used digraphs in the middle row, hand alternation and home row use rates are increased. |
