The invention relates to a device for tensioning the chains of crawler ve hicles, in particular the chains of hydraulic excavators, containing a first cylinder (6) which is arranged in the region of a chassis (2) of the tracke d vehicle and which is operatively connected by means of a piston rod to a g uide wheel (3) and which forms a tensioning cylinder, and a second cylinder (7) which is operatively connected to the first cylinder and which forms a s pring cylinder, wherein the second cylinder (7) concentrically surrounds the first cylinder (6) so as to form a double cylinder, and each cylinder has a separate hydraulic connection, wherein when the tracked vehicle is started, the hydraulic connections of the double cylinder are pressurized with a pre definable pre-tensioning pressure, the spring cylinder can, on account of it s relatively large cross-sectional area, be moved into its end position with maximum spring travel, and the tensioning cylinder pre-tensions the chain w ith a force which corresponds to the pre-tensioning pressure.
