A positioning system and method using the arrival time difference of electric waves are provided to accurately determine the position of a receiver by converting the arrival time difference into the radius of a circle or sphere and determining the position at the center of the circle or the sphere. A control station(100) adds navigation data on a transmission signal and wirelessly transmits the transmission signal. At least three base stations(200) receive the transmission signals from the control station and wirelessly transmit the transmission signals to a receiver(300). The receiver includes a multi-channel wireless transceiver, a controller, and a calculator. The multi-channel wireless transceiver wirelessly transmits/receives the transmission signals from the base stations. The controller determines a main station according to the transmission signals and measures the arrival time difference between the transmission signals by comparing timing signals from the main and sub stations. The calculator determines the distance difference between the main and sub stations and calculates a point of intersection between hyperbolas, which are determined by the distance difference. The calculator sets the point of intersection as the position of the receiver.
