PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer in which a printhead can be replaced without the protective cap rubbing the nozzle face of the printhead of an inkjet type. SOLUTION: The printer is equipped with a mounting means provided between a head holder 7 and a carriage 1 and a control means. The mounting means mounts the head holder 7 so as for the carriage 1 to be unmovable in a direction toward a print media and in an orthogonal direction thereof after the head holder 7 is inserted into the carriage 1 in the direction approaching protective caps 22a-22d. The control means moves the carriage 1 to a head replacing position so as for the nozzle face of the printhead 4a-4d to be away from the protective caps 22a-22d by a predetermined distance in a direction orthogonal to the carriage moving direction.
