Drill pipe joint with socket/spigot adapters - by tapered plugs for axial or peripheral force transmission

A joint for drill pipes is produced by adapters which fit together in a socket-and-spigot assembly. The adapters are locked together by radial plugs which are secured radially into inserts in the socket adapter and terminate in a cone which presses against a cone seat in an insert in the spigot adapter. Parallel gaps in the inserts in alternate directions ensure that alternate plugs transmit either only axial or onl radial forces from one pipe end to the next.
