1416117 Waveguide Joints INDUSTRIE PIRELLI SpA 24 Jan 1974 [2 Feb 1973] 03284/74 Heading H1W A flanged sleeve is accurately located about the end of a flexible waveguide by means of a cylindrical mandrel inserted into the end of the waveguide and firmly located therein by radial pressure against the internal wall. The waveguide consists conventionally of a helical winding 1 surrounded by a flexible sheath 2. The mandrel comprises an internal rotatable, threaded spindle 5 and an outer sleeve 8 carrying a frusto-conical portion 12. Rotation of the spindle 5 causes axial movement of a frusto-conical cap 14 and consequent radial movement of a slotted expansion member 18 which has an outer cylindrical surface engaging the winding 1 and an inner surface having portions complementary to the parts 12, 14. The mandrel is thus accurately located with its axis coincident to that of the waveguide. Thereafter, a flanged conical sleeve 32 is accurately located about the end of the waveguide by a support sleeve 37 having a cylindrical portion engaging the outer surface 30 of the mandrel and a flange 36 engaging a complementary part of the sleeve 32. The support sleeve 37 is axially adjustable by means of a collar 38 threaded on the mandrel. A two-part flange 33, 331 containing a sealing ring 34 supports the outer end of the conical sleeve 32. The space between the conical sleeve 32 and the sheath 2 is filled with, e.g. epoxide resin filler. After this has set, a spacer 29 is removed and the sleeve 32 pulled towards the flange 33, 331 (by bolts, not shown) to engage the sleeve tightly with the filler. Thereafter, the support sleeve 37 is removed and the end faces of the waveguide, the filling and the sleeve 32 accurately milled to provide a joining face for engagement with a similar face on a further waveguide section (Fig. 4) or on another waveguide component. The milling machine is accurately located upon the mandrel 8. Fig. 4 shows a joint between two flexible waveguides prepared as above. A spcing ring 41 between the bolted flanges contains annular seals 42.
