PURPOSE:To maintain the airtightness of an image pickup tube high and facilitate the connection between a connection electrode and a conductive layer in the pickup tube by bringing the open end of a cylindrical case into contact with a platinum film for the connection electrode which is fixed to a face plate and then fusing the platinum film to said open end thereby making the case of the pickup tube. CONSTITUTION:The glass case of an image pickup tube is made by airtightly fusing a cylindrical case 1 and a face plate 2. After a U-shaped platinum film 12 is formed on the face plate 2 by sputtering, the film 12 is brought into contact with the open end of the cylindrical case 1 and an oxygen-hydrogen gas burner 13 is used to fuse the film 12 to the open end thereby making a connection electrode 7 from the platinum film 12. Next, a transparent conductive layer 3 is placed on the inner surface of a face plate 2 in such a manner as to locate a part of the conductive layer 3 on the connection electrode 7 thereby connecting the layer 3 to the connection electrode 7. By the means mentioned above, the connection electrode 7 with low resistance and high physical strength can be easily produced from the platinum film 12 by fusion. Furthermore, the airtightness of the pickup tube can be maintained high.
