[Class 99 (ii)] [See also Groups XVII and XXX] Plastic material such as ice-cream is packed by a continuous process involving the formation of a cylindrical tube from longitudinally-overlapping strips of paper, &c., and the extrusion of the plastic material into the tube so formed. In one apparatus, the tube is formed from two strips of paper of which one 10, Fig. 3, is shaped in a die-block 15 to about three-quarter cylindrical formation and is then fed on to a recessed mandrel 19, Fig. 7, provided with an upper rib 20, the mandrel being supported in a block 23 fitted with a collar 23<a> which completes the formation of the strip 10 into a cylinder. The second paper strip 25 passes over a gumming roller 31, which applies two strips of adhesive (or of a moistener if the strip is previously gummed), and is then led over a series of adjustable rollers 40, 41, 42 which provide for the required time of partial drying of the adhesive, and over an adjustable guide arm 47, to the top of the mandrel 19. A spring-pressed electrically-heated block 24 causes the strip 25 to adhere to the top of the strip 10 to complete the formation of the tube, the two adhesive strips 25b, Fig. 1<a>, being on either side of the abutting edges of the strip 10. The edges of the strip 25 form projecting tabs 48 which are gripped by a conveyer device to draw the tube through the apparatus and which subsequently serve for the easy unwrapping of the material, a perforated line 25<a>, also being provided for this purpose. The pressing mechanism 24 has a crank-controlled cam device 104 for lifting in order to thread through the paper at the start of the process. In a modified apparatus designed to produce a wrapping tube as shown in Fig. 18 with a projecting tab 143 on each strip of paper, both strips which are similar are gummed near one edge and the pressure device of Fig. 7 is modified as shown in Fig. 17 and provided with heating means in each half.
