PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To align rod-like liquid crystalline molecules substantially perpendicularly and uniformly to an interface with air. SOLUTION: The aligning film having a perpendicularly aligning function and a compound represented by formula (I): (Hb-L<1> -Cy<1> -L<2> -)n Cy<2> (wherein Hb is a 6-40C aliphatic group or a 6-40C aliphatic group-substituted siloxanoxy group; L<1> and L<2> are each a single bond or a bivalent linking group; Cy<1> is a bivalent aromatic group or a bivalent heterocyclic group; n is 2, 3 or 4; and Cy<2> is an n-valent aromatic group or an n-valent heterocyclic group) are combined to align rod-like liquid crystalline molecules.
