Warning device for motor vehicles having a transparent carrier which contains a warning symbol or a warning message in a latently visible fashion, which carrier is arranged on the rear window of the motor vehicle and can be driven by means of a switch which is arranged within the reach of the driver, preferably on the dashboard, for the purpose of making the warning symbol or warning message visible. The transparent carrier can be formed by a glass plate which forms the front wall of a light box, the light of which can be switched on by means of the switch. It can also be formed by a liquid crystal display which can be driven by means of the switch. Finally, the warning information can be applied to the transparent carrier by means of an adhesive film and can be made visible to the driver of the vehicle behind by being illuminated from the inside. The transparent carrier can be formed by the rear window itself. The transparent carrier can be coupled to a recording device which is switched on simultaneously with the warning device and serves to record the time of the warning by automatically reading off the vehicle clock and, if appropriate, other data relating to the warning such as location, registration number of the vehicle, reason for the warning or the like.
