An aqueous coating composition is prepared from (optionally waste) polyethylene terephthalate. The polyethylene terephtalate is first reacted with carboxylic acids or their anhydrides and then with an alcohol to form a low-molecular-weight polyester with an acid value greater than 30, which is then enutralized with a weak base and added to water. Preferably ethylenically unsaturated monomers are subsequently polymerized in the presence of this polyester.
