The holding element is used for the vertical fixation of a glass pane to be glued in a window frame of a motor vehicle. It comprises a holding part (1) made of energy-elastic plastic which can be inserted into the lower window frame and runs parallel to the inner surface of the pane, and from which a number of supporting steps (2, 3) protrude, which steps are connected to the holding part (1) via flexibly yielding webs (6, 7) and are arranged one above another equally spaced in the vertical direction of support. In order to obtain the finest possible graduation between the individual supporting steps (2, 3) and, at the same time, a support which is free from play, the supporting steps (2, 3) are connected to the holding part (1) via a respective web (6, 7) alternately on one and then on the other side of the supporting region (5), the supporting steps (3) of one side being attachable separately to the holding part (1) and engaging in a manner free from play between the supporting steps (2) of the other side.
