PURPOSE: To produce the wire used as the material excellent in surface cleanness by specifying the diameter, length and surface roughness of a wire made of a Co base alloy having a specified composition. CONSTITUTION: The wires are made of a Co base alloy such as Co-Ni base alloy that contains <=30wt.% Ni and the balance consisting substantially of Co, Co-Cr base alloy that contains <=30wt.% Cr and the balance consisting substantially of Co, or metal that contains Co and inevitable impurities and consists substantially of 100wt.% Co. Each of these metals is formed into a wire having a 1.00 to 10mm diameter, length of >=1,000 times as long as the diameter and <=5μm surface roughness (average roughness of 10 points) by subjecting the metal to hot working or cold working to form in into a wire and thereafter performing the shaving of the resulting wire at a >=50m/min speed. Thus, the wire materials for vapor deposition and their production can be provided.
